Do you want to play a key role in shaping how Scotland’s colonial past is interpreted and presented today? Are you passionate about archaeology, community engagement, and inclusive heritage? Are you passionate about Scotland’s maritime history and its connections to global heritage?

Join the Heritage Leadership Programme and spend 14 months gaining hands-on
experience at one of three different sites:

  • Newbattle Abbey College in Dalkeith (Inclusive Archaeology)
  • Scotland Maritime Museum in Irvine (Maritime history and global role of Scotland)
  • David Livingstone Birthplace, Blantyre (Colonial past and African stories)
Responsibilities:

● Work with the organisation’s assets and activities , such as museum exibitions, employability programmes, community outreach programmes, consultation and evaluation processes.

● Contribute to events, outreach, and school programmes● Help engage underrepresented audiences in decision-making and programme co-creation.

● Learn by doing in a supportive, hands-on environment

● Collaborate with the team on strategic areas including advocacy and business development

● (Scotland’s Maritime Museum and David Livingstone Birthplace): Support the functioning of activities of the museums, and work on several public-facing roles.

● (Archaeology at Newbattle Abbey College): Participate in fieldwork and contribute to practice-based innovation

Competencies:

● Passionate about the past, community heritage, and social impact

● Ready to learn and take initiative in a hands-on environment

● Curious, inclusive, and motivated to improve access to heritage

● Flexible in working locations and hours (some evenings/weekends required)

● Comfortable travelling across Scotland and working remotely as needed

● Experience supervising or leading small teams (paid, volunteer, or personal projects)

● Experience in education, youth work, or equality-focused organisations

● Familiarity with archaeological, museum or heritage-based engagement

● Strong communication, time management, and interpersonal skills

● Ability to write reports, adapt communication for diverse audiences, and use basic digital tools (MS Office, email, etc.)
